Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: Whoever does not argue when he is in the wrong will have a home built for him on the edge of Paradise. Whoever avoids it when he is in the right will have a home built for him in the middle of Paradise. And whoever improves his own character, a home will be built for him in the highest part of Paradise. (Tirmidhi)

Sometimes we can feel so strongly about something that when someone gives a contradicting opinion or a different outlook, we get worked up about it, and we turn it into an argument. We’ll keep going until we have convinced them, and if they’re not convinced, we’ll probably bring it up again at a later time.

However, arguing is discouraged in Islam, as we can tell from the hadith. It rarely gets anyone to change their minds, (we’re a pretty stubborn kind!). It only creates defensiveness and ill feelings between people, and involves a matter of ego, which we should avoid. And there is no reason to involve ourselves in arguments which do not concern our deen.

Whether we are right or wrong, we should state our point of view and just leave it at that. In both cases, we have houses built for us in Jannah InshAllah. When we know we are right, it becomes more difficult to refrain from arguing back and so the reward is greater for the one who does this.

Quick Tip: Every time you feel an argument brewing, take a second to remember this hadith and choose to have a house in Jannah rather than the satisfaction of  ‘trying to convince people’ and getting your point across a hundred times. Share your perspective calmly and leave it at that.
